Comparison of Serum and Salivary Testosterone in Impotent Men

Abstract
For evaluating the androgenic state, it is ideal to measure the free testosterone which is biologically active form of testosterone. However, it is not applied generally to clinical diagnostic method because of the technical difficulty and the
least
constitution in total serum testosterone. We compared the concentration of serum testosterone with the level of salivary testosterone in the 7 endocrinogenic and 22 non-endocrinogenic impotent patients who had diagnosed by the concentration of
serum
testosterone.
1. There was a significant correlation between serum and salivary testosterone levels in all patients.
2. For comparison of serum and salivary testosterone, it was not correlated in endocrinogenic impotence whereas a significant correlation was presented in non-endocrinogenic impotence.
3. As determined with this assay, a significant correlation between serum and salivary testosterone was obtained in young but no correlation was resulted in older(>40 years) subjects.
There was no correlation between serum and salivary testosterone in the endocrinogenic or the older(>40 years) impotent men. We conclude that the direct radioimmunoassay of testosterone in saliva is a simple, non-invasive method and gives a
correct
interpretation of androgenic state in the endocrinogenic impotence.
